Three Sherpas missing above Everest

Kathmandu [Nepal], April 13: Three Sherpas went missing above the base camp of Mount Everest on Wednesday. They were at an area between the Base Camp and Camp I when an avalanche hit them, Yuwaraj Khatiwada, a spokesperson of the Department of Tourism, said. A helicopter rescue was attempted to retrieve Sherpas believed to have fallen into a 50-meter crevasse, but the mission was unsuccessful. The Sherpas, employed by expedition company Imagine Nepal, were shuttling loads and preparing for the final summit push. According to the tourism department, 197 climbers have obtained permits to climb Everest from Nepal from April to early June in the spring. The number of climbers could reach up to 500 this year due to the high number of Chinese climbers, according to the Kathmandu Post. (DPA)
